Lucy Lovett-Bickley

d. June 5, 2021

Lucy, beloved companion of the Lovett-Bickley family, crossed the Rainbow Bridge, Saturday, June 5, 2021.

Lucy was a rescue! October 2008, this beautiful tan/reddish haired dog, with a curled tail, came to live with us. I have never had a dog before, so had no clue what I was in for. I did know that dogs licked and jumped and shed and barked a lot. Lucy didn't do any of that though (OK, she did shed but we never noticed). She never licked anyone nor did she every jump up on anyone. She did bark but it was always with a message that you would understand - "I need to go out" or "feed me" or "you don't belong here".

We all adjusted well. Lucy loved to go for rides with Bruce in his truck. She also loved her walks. Bruce would walk her around the neighborhood. Cheryl, our neighbor and friend, and I would take her on adventure walks. We walked in downtown Columbia, Rosewood, Olympia and Lake Murray Dam. We walked both sides of the river walks and all over Cayce and West Columbia. She loved to sniff new ground.

Lucy was a very smart dog. Someone spent a lot of time training her. That training had to include talking to her. She let us know early on that she understood what we said to her - "go get your collar", "hand me that peanut", "go poop" - to all she responded with the action we requested. The first time she ever put a tree between us, I said, "this side", and she immediately turned around and came to the side of the tree I was on. To say this was a remarkable dog is an understatement.

She never went into the kitchen. She would stop and sit at the door and watch us. No matter what we cooked or dropped, she stayed at the door. When we did drop something, she would tilt her head as if asking, "is that for me"?

Lucy had lived with us for about 4 years when she was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. We could not take the long walks anymore but we did continue with at least a mile a day.

Things that I learned from Lucy: Patience, Forgiveness, Kindness and Unconditional Love. I know that God sent her to us, right when we needed all of this. And now was the time that God needed her back.

Truth be told - Lucy rescued us.
